The Boy on the Bridge (The Girl with All the Gifts #2) – M.R. Carey

Notes:

Although, this book is classed as the second book in the Girl with All the Gifts series, this story precedes The Girl with All the Gifts (TGWATG) by around 20 years. The great thing about the original TGWATG story was how it developed slowly, revealing its world bit by bit as the story progressed. When I read it, I had no idea what it was about. All I knew is that many people whose opinions I respected were highly recommending it.

In fact, if I’d known its ostensible genre it would have put me off and I doubt if I would have read it. So I was glad I knew nothing at all about it when I did read it. (This is one of the reasons I tend to dislike classing books by genre, as preconceptions can have a detrimental effect when a book turns out to be too dissimilar to its supposed genre. Also, I’ve known far too many people who refuse to read certain books because they don’t like that genre.)

This makes it a bit difficult for this second book. We know what this strange world is – even though I don’t want to discuss it here for those who have not read the first book.

This novel is similar in several ways to TGWATG, in its mix of characters, the opposition they face, the strangeness of the world they have to negotiate, and in this too it is not always apparent to them that the enemy they face is not their only enemy.

I liked this one almost as much as I liked TGWATG, and would recommend it almost as whole-heartedly. I hope there are more to come in this series.

Synopsis:

Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy.

The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world.

To where the monsters lived.
